Yoga and Sports: Skiing

February 16th, 2009

It is incredible what yoga does for skiing. People can ski all day long and much better.

Conditioning before hitting the slopes can increase the safety and enjoyment of the sport. Most ski injuries occur early in the day when muscles are tight and enthusiasm is high, and late in the day when muscles are weakened and technique is poor.

A simple yoga exercise called the awkward pose, can increase your strength, balance and concentration which will make the ski season more rewarding.

It consists of three variations which are done sequentially.

To begin, stand with the feet apart, about shoulder width, an even distance (approximately six inches) between your heels and toes. Extend the arms out in front of you parallel to the floor with the shoulders pressed down and away from the head. Keep the upper body strong and firm in this position.

Bend your knees and shift the weight back into the heels, pushing the buttocks out behind you. When the top of the thighs are parallel to the floor and arms, hold your pose. The feet should be held parallel and the knees should only be shoulder width apart.

One good way to think of getting into this pose is to imagine that you are sitting in an invisible chair leaning back to bring the spine and shoulders against the back of the chair. The arm muscles are contracted, the abdomen is held tight and your breathing should be normal. Hold the pose for 20 seconds. Stand up.

The second part of this series is similar to the first. Keep the upper body the same as before and stand straight up onto the balls of the feet, standing as high as possible with the arches pressed forward. To keep the ankles strong and straight, press down with each big toe. Now, bend the knees again keeping the spine straight and stop when the quadriceps are parallel to the floor. Hold this pose for 20 seconds. Stand up. You will find this second pose a bit more difficult.

Third, assume the same basic pose with upper body firm and strong. Again, slowly bend the knees and this time sit all the way down lightly onto the heels. Now press the knees together and hold the body still. The quadriceps are again level with the floor and the spine is straight. Hold again for 20 seconds. Stand up out of the pose slowly, bring the heels down and relax. Don’t forget to do a second set of all three poses.

The World of Wrestling

February 9th, 2009

Wrestling has been defined as an act of involving hand-to-hand combat. The sport is described as struggle between unarmed opponents with a purpose of overthrowing each other outside the ring. Wrestling was believed to originate in large circuses of Europe specifically in St. Petersburg. Wrestling then is characterized by 2 fighters grabbing each other’s clothing or body.

There are different kinds of wrestling sports as enumerated below:

1.    Collegiate Wrestling - this is sometimes called folk style wrestling. To score, the person must pin down his opponent on the mat for 2 seconds. Other scoring situations are controlling the opponent’s hips on the mat for 3 seconds. Both can give you 2 points. Simply escaping from the opponent will give you 1 point. This type of wrestling is usually used by younger participants in middle or high-school classes.

2.    Free Style Wrestling - this is a kind of amateur wrestling also included in the Olympic Games. Grabbing the opponents’ clothing, kicking, head butting or punching are illegal moves; 3 warnings mean disqualification from the game.

3.    Greco Roman Wrestling - this is an amateur type of wrestling being practiced in international competitions and in Olympic. Attacks below the waist and use of legs are strictly prohibited; thus throws are encouraged to gain scores.

4.    Judo - this originated in Japan, ironically, judo means “gentle”. An opponent should learn from the person’s force to reverse it to his own advantage. It is believed that there are symbolisms in judo and strokes must be precise and exact.

5.    Sambo - means “self defense with no weapon and was developed in the Soviet Union. Before, this kind of wrestling is used as a part of military drill in Russia. Sambo is characterized by arm locks but there is no strangulation. The match always starts with an initial grip of the opponent’s belt.

There are certain developments being done in the world of wrestling. The most popularized is the World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. which is widely spread in internet, television and magazines. Popular celebrities abound the arena and people are looking forward to watch live shows just to feed their desire of seeing rumbles and smack downs.

Recently, E-Wrestling has been launched. This is a creative interactive game on the internet. The player or handler creates his own character and will fight against a chosen opponent; like doing it in a live show.

Wrestling is a kind of sport which caters not only to young but adult generation; females also get into this sport nowadays. There is nothing wrong with this kind of sport; having proper discipline and hard work together with an apt learning and you’re into the popular world of wrestling.

The Popularity of Sports Sponsorship

February 2nd, 2009

Sports sponsorship can be observed and dated back to Rome and Ancient Greece where prominent society members supported the arts festival as well as the sports played. By support, it didn’t mean the proper sponsorship or patronage that was considered as a marketing tool. It rather meant continuation of such festivals and athletic events for entertainment.

Today, however, sponsorship through sports has become one of the most popular kinds of sponsorship due to the amount of exposure it can get for both sponsor and sponsee. Sponsoring an athlete or sport means that the sponsor is exchanging products or money for the right to link and associate the company name with the sporting event or athlete.

Why do organizations sponsor sports?

Aside from the popularity tag sports sponsorship gives, a number of other benefits also appeal to the company’s interest. Some of the most common benefits are given below:

Added value to brand

Companies that sponsor sports want their product or range of products to have added value when attached to a sports event or group. By value, this points to product quality, price and/or content. Companies use sports as a leverage to stand out among other competitors, and in turn create for themselves a top position where consumers can remember the name, and possibly have permanent brand recognition.

So what exactly do sports have that other types of sponsorships don’t necessarily offer? To view in terms of goals - sporting events have always had one definite output, and that is there is always a winner in the end. There is always competition; a test of which team or athlete will overcome the other, proving who is superior.

Gold medals, trophies, world records, global awareness are involved in sports and are the symbol of status of teams or athletes in a particular sport. Winners become popular enough to become household names, and this is what appeals to corporations who want to give out sponsorships. They want their name attached to that household name - which will in turn become a household name.

Major corporations such as Gatorade have applied this kind of sponsorship and come out as one of the most popular brands for beverage products. They attach themselves with major sporting events and give relevance by pointing out the benefit of the product to the athlete. This then sticks to the minds of consumers and sports enthusiast about which sports drink is the one to stick to.

Sports sponsorship does not only apply to major companies, but also to small businesses as well. The general idea of brand awareness is still applied and the only difference is the level or scale it covers.

All in all, organizations support sporting events with specific objectives, each of which is addressed below:

* Brand Awareness - this objective seeks to let consumers become aware of the product name.

* Brand Image - this objective attempts to create a specific style and/or personality that distinguishes a brand from its other competitors, and in turn may give premium pricing

* Consumer relations - corporations support sporting events to directly involve themselves with consumers and potential clients, proving that their company is capable of providing proper services and/or products

* Community relations - A more altruistic approach is for this objective wherein the company is concerned about the welfare of a community; and so supporting a sports event can make themselves know to the community

* Employee relations - this objective for a corporation is to promote employee loyalty that will in the long term be very beneficial to the business

Authentic Football Jersey

January 25th, 2009

Every time I put on my college throwback football jersey, I am reminded of some of the very best days of my life.  It is, of course, an authentic football jersey.  Let me tell you that I do not watch college sports much anymore.  I have, of course, an NFL football jersey for my favorite team, the Raiders, and they do wear it for every single one of their games.  But there’s something about authentic football jerseys from back in the day that really make the memories start to flow.  It was one of the best times of my life, and it is nice to have an article of clothing that really takes me back to it.  I can put on my authentic football jersey, and it is like I am really there again.  Although I was never on the starting line, I did get to share in the glory of my college football team, and that made a big difference in how I lived in how I felt about myself.  Those days may be gone, but they do live on through my authentic football jersey.  It really does more to make me happy than any other article of clothing that I own.

Of course, my NFL football jersey also cheers me up, but in a different way.  Wearing my professional authentic football jersey really puts me in the mood to go out and enjoy the game with the boys.  We are all, every last one of us, armchair quarterbacks, and we enjoy the fantasy of playing in the pros like our heroes to.  This may not be a possibility for many of us, or really for any of us, but through wearing an authentic football jersey, anyone can participate in this fantasy and feel like they are really on the team.  We are all stuck in day jobs that we are not crazy about, and that do not pay us enough money, and so it is really a wonderful piece of escapism to be able to put on an authentic football jersey, turn on the television, and suddenly feel like you are there yourself.  Honestly, and I know that this may sound strange to say, professional sports are what keep me going day to day and make my life worth living.  All of this is epitomized by the authentic football jersey that I can put on any time I want to play make-believe.
